My little boy turned one today. We celebrated with cupcakes, barbecue, presents, and a little surprise — a video capturing his first year of life.
It’s actually not a surprise at all to my family or my wife’s. I’ve made one for each of my three nephews. It was actually expected by a few family members. Nonetheless, we showed this video today at the party. There were laughs and tears alike. It’s already become an important time capsule in his life, capturing him with his great grandmother Mary, a true saint who passed back in December. It was hard for me to even put it together, so I can only imagine how it was for my wife’s family to watch it, not knowing exactly what was coming. But everyone is grateful for it, and I know Walter will appreciate it. How I would have loved to have seen footage of my great grandfather Jack when I first met him. He died soon after I was born.
So here’s to you, Walt. If nothing else, this should show you how loved you are. And as the video says in closing with one of my favorite quotes from a Cormac McCarthy book, you have always been loved.
